Der Zenit ist die nach oben verlΓ€ngerte Lotrichtung eines Standortes. Die Gegenrichtung nennt sich Nadir (β€žFußpunktβ€œ). Diese Achse definiert die Horizontebene als deren Normale. Zusammen mit den Himmelspolen ist der Zenit die Basis fΓΌr Astronomische Koordinatensysteme.cite-ref-1[1]

Der Name kommt vom arabischen Ψ³Ω…Ψͺ Ψ§Ω„Ψ±Ψ£Ψ³ / samt ar-raΚΎs / β€šRichtung des Kopfesβ€˜. Durch Schreibfehler und falsche Lesarten wurde in mittelalterlichen Texten aus samt die Schreibweise cemt oder zemt und daraus cenit beziehungsweise zenit.cite-ref-2[2]

Die GeodΓ€sie betrachtet die Lotabweichung zwischen dem Zenit und der vereinzelt ellipsoidischer Zenit genannten Normalen auf das Referenzellipsoid.cite-ref-3[3]
